What Are Keloid Scars?

There are three main types of abnormal scars, hypertrophic scars, atrophic scars and keloids. Keloids are scars that are raised or thickened and extend beyond the borders of the original point of trauma or incision.

What Causes Keloid Scars?

Keloid scars, like other types of scars, are most commonly caused by an injury to the skin or an incision. This can be any form of trauma, from surgery to body piercing. Keloids may also be caused by inflammation from acne, a burn or an insect bite.

The most noticeable difference between a keloid and a hypertrophic scar is its extension beyond the borders of the original injury. Additionally, keloids may continue to grow, instead of fading over time. These scars are especially susceptible to regrowing after surgical removal, and as such, must be treated with a comprehensive approach.

How Are Keloid Scars Treated?

Due to the unique and persistent way many keloid scars resist treatment, a combination approach is recommended. Treatments may include:

  • Corticosteroids

  • Surgery

  • Pulsed dye lasers

  • Radiation

This is a very general overview of the methods used to treat keloids. For a specific treatment plan, we recommend scheduling a consultation.
